This study deals with the multilingualism competence of teenagers of Portuguese origin from Luxembourg. It shows that teenagers have a command of functionally multilingualism competence: they have different levels of command of French, German, Portuguese and Luxembourg language and they attribute to these languages different functions. The « langue des cités » constitutes a contemporary myth. This paper, with particular reference to a corpus of newspaper articles, presents the main frame of this myth and then gives a contribution to its release. To this end, this paper presents the results of a research on language practices of young speakers attending training centers for their social and professional insertion, on the outskirts of Paris. It stresses the characteristics of their speech and reflects the social complexity of their language use in the interactional process during training sessions.
Based on the example of the Français Contemporain des Cités (FCC), this article presents a comparative and contrastive study of the language of young people and an analysis from a translatological point of view. The corpus selected – two novels and one film from the Paris Banlieues – comprises the original post-production script, the German dubbing transcripts and the German subtitles of the movie L’Esquive, as along with the two original novel texts and the German translation of one of them, Kiffe kiffe demain. The study discusses the difficulties encountered when attempting to transpose such culturally specific texts and proposes possible solutions, whereby the main problems are found to lie in the area of lexis and phraseology.
In France, the so-called Z.U.S (Zones Urbaines Sensibles, meaning Sensitive Social Areas) are places of the social deprivation. Among others, young people live there, often descendant of immigrants. The language they speak shows clearly they belong to the world of the suburbs, as it contains the typical linguistic forms, the so-called F.C.C. (Français Contemporain des Cités, or French Suburbs Language). A certain social behaviours, typical for their environment, are reflected in these forms that also demonstrate an existence of the social and reactive violence, a straight consequence of the previous. All these can be seen in the suburbs of the French cities.
