One important cultural phenomenon concerning virtuality and adolescence may be the latter’s addiction to brand names.
Like the image, the brand, a modern equivalent of mythology, could be both an object and a relation. This would transform the perspective from which it is analyzed, particularly with regard to the bonds that adolescents maintain with brand names.

With reference to fundamental aspects of the adolescent process, the author explores the issue of the transformation of experiences of shame at this age, their disorganization and reorganization. She emphasizes the things that contribute to the often traumatic character of shame and its impact on the subject’s narcissism, especially passivation in the face of the genital and pre-genital drive emergences of puberty, and the modifying of identifications.

The solidity of adoptive filiation is gauged when tested by the identity mutations proper to adolescence. The parental setting is much solicited in its function of containing and of transforming adolescent anxieties. The path which has led to the child-turned-adolescent is then re-interrogated to test the originating imaginary world of the couple in its historicizing role. We will discuss the reasons for the psychical vulnerability of adoptive filiation, and the similarities between filiating process and adolescent process. On the parents’ side, one difficulty is represented by the inability to make a connection between the child in his pre-adoptive history, marked by abandonment and affective deficiencies, and the continuity of their own family history.

A complete description of adolescence may be made using a conceptual model that connects two kinds of system, open and closed. Far from representing diagnostic categories, these systems are constructions illustrating different adaptive choices available to adolescents at a critical time in their development. Open systems indicate the effort to transform the self, while closed systems indicate a need to control, force and change other people. Reference to both these systems has profound implications for practice and theory, not least because they provide a different way of looking at adolescence, the goal no longer being separation, but rather transformation.
