Jean-Philippe Moutte: After you, my beautiful self-portrait…

At a time when the practice of the selfie is spreading like wildfire, the presentation of self-portraits created by two young artists (Francesca Woodman, Zhang Huan) will attempt to shed light on the way that these creations can contribute – by capturing the disquiet, the tension that is proper to the pubertary – to the subject’s ability to appropriate metamorphosis for use in subjectalisation. Engaging in such a creative process is never without risk, particularly the risk of breakdown or self-destruction.

Jean-Philippe Moutte : Après toi, mon bel autoportrait…

Bernard Golse: more suicide in pre-adolescence?

After having specified the central theoretical problematics in the latency period, the paper underscores the fact that latency is a period unlike others, and is the result of a co-construction between the child and adults. Starting from there, we can consider that suicide attempts in preadolescence for which the current increase in rates in Western societies is undeniable can perhaps be related to the fact that babies are no longer allowed enough time to be babies

François Richard: suicidal tendency and the figure of the dead child

This article imagines the connections between the adolescent suicide attempt and the symbiotic relationship with primary objects, starting with the way that an adult patient is able to elaborate, after the fact, his adolescent suicidal tendency, the revival at puberty of his infantile Oedipal desires and the persistence of a symbiotic mode of relating.

»Facing this confusing period of the passage childhood to adulthood, faced with the painful truth of « non-existence « and the inability to overstep the child’s body and child’s psyche, the teenager may act this out by self-aggression, in which suicide is paradoxically the chief existential claim. We propose to investigate this suicidal position and the repercussions of a suicidal act upon adults using an example of intervention with both students and staff of a school subsequent to the suicide of two students.»

Suicide is an enigmatic act. It is performed outside the boundaries of common sense, it is a nonsense act. What makes a subject unable to escape the dead-end of the following alternative: « your money or your life » ? How can one go beyond the question of the impossible choice ? The being or the meaning? Edouard Levé has comitted suicide after having written a book named Suicide, which dealt with one of his youth friend’s suicide. Through his writing, he tries to clear the very mystery of one’s existence and of the dopplerganger’s which emerge like an imaginary echo. Would’nt that be, by the way, one of the questions raised by most suicides?

Jean-Marie Firdion : risk of suicide in youngsters with unconventional sexual orientation

Making a synthesis from a recent report, the author presents the hypothesis of an association between suicide attempt, or suicide, among youths and homosexual or bisexual orientation. The consonant findings of North-American epidemiological works, published last years, emphasize the fact that homosexuality, per se, is not a direct causal factor in suicidality among youths. Nonetheless, homosexual or bisexual orientation are factors that increase the risk of suicidal behaviors (with a significant effect). This phenomenon could be related to homophobia and heterosexism, still present in our societies. These conclusions have a strong effect on prevention programs and policies directed to youths. The American research results underscore the need for collecting and analyzing such data in France.

Françoise Fericelli-Broun : Adolescence and Suicide: Deontological and Ethical Issues

In this article, the author proposes to define and distinguish the notions of morals, of deontology and of ethics as applied to the medical field. Deontology and ethics are then investigated within the framework of the psychiatric treatment of suicidal adolescents. This type of therapeutic situation repeatedly and violently confronts the caregivers with deontological and ethical questions.
A clinical vignette allows us to show some modes of ethical questioning, a questioning which is indispensable to the elaboration of a care-giving action.
